Is Pop Culture Good For You?
Is pop culture good for you? One of the most popular questions of all time is this one. While a few people believe it to be good, others do not. Pop culture has its own positives and negatives, just like every other example and everything else. In addition to being useless and pointless, pop culture can also be quite beneficial and a form of escape. Everything has its own good and bad.
PROS
Pop culture may be beneficial in a variety of ways, including keeping in contact, bringing people together, learning, entertaining, teaching, and making everything easier. The most important of them all is, staying in touch. We can communicate with our friends, family, and loved ones through, texting, messages, or FaceTime. We get to laugh and chat for several hours. A good example is during the Covid pandemic, everyone was staying in touch and letting each other know how they were doing and what they had been to. Without pop culture at the time, we would not have known anything about one another or how we were surviving during that difficult period of our lives. Particularly if we were stuck while being on vacation or traveling to another country.
We can learn a lot from pop culture while also being entertained. We are entertained and get life lessons when watching a film or a television show. The article, "Watching TV Makes You smarter" states, "The intellectual work is happening on screen, not off " We gain knowledge about new races and ethnicities, cultures, regions, etc. Additionally, regardless of differences in region, race, nationality, religion, or politics, pop culture helps us feel a sense of common identity, meaning, and purpose. When we learn about others, we get inspired and motivated to improve our own lives and cultures.
CONS
It might, however, also be seriously damaging and harmful. In my psychology class, we studied and researched how pop culture may cause depression and sadness in people. Looking at other people's lives on social media depresses us and makes us think that our own life isn't as ideal as theirs. Even though, it's possible that some people are posting false information, posts, and facts. Not everything posted on the internet is true, half of the postings are false and dishonest. In the article, it states, " Are people who log on to their Facebook page really the best hope for us all?" People use Facebook as a solver for our problems. In reality, we never share our sad moments or the things we are truly going through; we always only share our joyful moments.
Young children will view pop culture as if it were true and will believe what is being posted, displayed, or even what trends are currently popular. Kids follow trends and have no understanding of how pop culture could affect them; instead, they simply go with the flow. Nowadays, every child has a phone and is constantly plugged into pop culture and social media. A good example of this is TikTok, which is full of dances and trends that gain popularity for no apparent reason. Some songs don't even match the beat of the dance. Yet, people continue to make the dance and the music widely known to a crowd, and the dance spreads via Facebook, Instagram, events, and other platforms.
Pop culture has both harmful and beneficial consequences. However, while we are still alive and well, we should live our true lives. Less pop culture, more real life.
